I want to inspire—with my photography and with my teaching of photography.
For me, photography is all about connecting. Connecting to your emotions. Connecting to the people you photograph. Connecting to something beyond yourself. And then finally, connecting with your audience through your photos.
Photography has always been my way of telling stories. Ever since I, as a nine-year old boy, got my first Instamatic, I have been fascinated by the media’s ability to express complex realities and visually make sense of the world in layers of understanding—although I didn’t have the vocabulary to say something like that back then. Today, as a photojournalist and documentary photographer I more than ever rely on being able to tell stories through my photography. Does my work have any impact on the turning of the world? I would hope so, if only slightly so, but what is most important for me is to give voice to those who otherwise won’t get to tell their story.
